Ben Silverman and NBC: Could Knight Rider be the next Supertrain?

Am I the only one who remembers the show Supertrain from February 1979?

Enjoying a brief six month run on NBC-TV, "Supertrain" has been noted as one of television's biggest disasters of all-time. "Supertrain" was reportedly rushed into production, cost the network a fortune, and failed miserably in the ratings…and if memory serves, cost quite a few people in both Burbank and at 30Rock their jobs.

Not sure if the new "Knight Rider" will become the next "Supertrain" however I found the following blurb on FishBowlNY of interest.

Ben Silverman Riding Towards the End?

Could last night have been the middle of the end for Ben Silverman, the embattled co-chairman of NBC Entertainment?

According to TV By The Numbers (via Vulture), only 7.3 million people tuned in last night for the premiere of Knight Rider, a show Silverman championed.

Just last week he got a vote of confidence from his boss Jeff Zucker, but if the Peacock continues to struggle, it could give the company's brass the excuse it needs to get rid of Silverman.

Here Comes the GPhone

Interesting article in todays "MediaPost" regarding the new G1 Mobile Phone…including a quote from my buddy Eric Bader.
-Bill

Move over, iPhone–the Gphone has arrived. After months of Internet-fueled speculation and hype, T-Mobile Tuesday unveiled the G1 mobile phone powered by Google's Android operating system and bundled with Google software including search, Gmail, Maps, and YouTube.

With a large touch screen and a raft of features, the new phone takes direct aim at the iPhone–but will be priced lower at $179 when it goes on sale in the U.S. Oct. 22, with a two-year voice and data plan. Unlike the rival Apple device, it adds a slide-out Qwerty keyboard.

The G1 also comes loaded with a version of Amazon's digital music store offering more than 6 million DRM-free tracks to compete with music powerhouse iTunes.

Eric Bader, co-founder and CEO of mobile consultancy Brand in Hand said Android's open platform represents a "seismic difference" for an industry built on walled gardens and closed operating systems. "Android will lead to larger audiences and bigger reach, which is what media buyers have been waiting for," he said.

One of the biggest barriers to growth has been the need to develop content and ad programs for different platforms. "That forces working media dollars to be used in production and ad serving and kills ROI," said Bader, formerly managing director of MediaVest Digital.

Adrie Reinders: The Financial Crisis and Social/Business Networking

My good friend and colleague, Adrie Reinders, is the CEO and Co-Founder of the E.Factor, a vibrant online community and virtual marketplace designed for entrepreneurs, by entrepreneurs.

Adrie's recent blog post is all about the current financial crisis and networking.

-Bill

Duke University, Financial Crisis and Networking

Networking is used and recognized for its values in many aspects of business these days. With all the lay-offs, certainly recently in the in the financial industry, people will unfortunately come to the conclusion that they did not spend time to network until it was too late.

As we said in our book "the N Factor", you should start networking as early as possible in life, when it is still easy to connect. Especially people working for major corporations, will often believe that they have a fabulous network. However - it is very easy to be introduced to, or connect to others when you have the name of a big corporation behind you. It becomes a totally different story if you are no longer part of that corporate and a mere individual. Those contacts you had when part of the organization often don't stand for much when you are on your own. And needless to say, it is when you are on your own that you need them all the more..

Successful Networking: Prepare, Plan and Prosper

A fantastic article from my colleague Marion Freijsen, Co-Founder of The E.Factor, the online community and virtual marketplace designed for entrepreneurs, by entrepreneurs.

DO: Be Prepared

Sales people ought to know that preparation is key. It is one of the three p's that I always used to repeat to my team: Prepare, Plan and Prosper. But it isn't simply something that aids the success of salespeople alone - preparation in many ways should be the automatic first step in any process an entrepreneur chooses.

This week I spoke at a WimLink (www.wimlink.org) event in New York - whilst the subject was about Networking specifically - again the topic of preparation came up. Talking about networking - we hit upon the issue of how you deal with events. Whether large scale or small scale - again you can do a lot worse then prepare yourself well in order to gain maximum advantage and knowledge.

I so often wonder why people actually attend conferences. Typically when you speak to someone about their upcoming conference or trade show - they bemoan the fact that they have to go and sit through "boring" lectures and "sad case studies" or listen to people "drone on" about stuff they really don't care much for. So why do they go? Only because their boss tells them, or they feel they have to be seen to be there. To me, all the wrong reasons. Conferences or Events can be great, but only if take the trouble to prepare, to research the subject, the speakers and the other participants.

Hot off her second Emmy, Kathy Griffin has signed with Endeavor.

On Saturday, Griffin's Bravo series "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" was named best reality program for a second consecutive year at the Creative Arts Emmys. The comedian-actress also is slated to serve as a presenter Sunday at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards alongside her idol Don Rickles.

"D-List," based on Griffin's stage act, concluded its fourth season last month. She continues to be repped by attorney Bill Sobel and by ICM for touring.

Griffin is a former Groundlings improv member and co-star of the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan." Her comedy album "For Your Consideration" was released in June.
